Idaho DiscoveredAs a native Idahoan, this is the first book I have ever found that truly represents the entire state. Idaho is a very diverse landscape and a huge area to cover by any means of transportation. Kirk Anderson's commitment to intimately discover and share his Idaho journey is a gift to all who know or wish to know this beautiful state. The photography proves to be of the highest caliber. Great !

The Best of Robert Service

Great PoetryRobert Service was the common man's poet. Even if you don't normally read poetry, you will find some that are enjoyable. He is best known for his poems about the Yukon such as "The Shooting of Dan McGrew" ("A bunch of the boys were whooping it up in the Malemute saloon..."), but the collection contains much more. It covers the poet's Yukon period, but also World War I and Bohemian Paris. Robert Service's poems ranged from dark humor such as "The Cremation of Sam McGee," to sad and sentimental poems such as "Muguet." Some of his poems addressed particular topics such as taxes ("Resentment"), dieting ("The Battle of the Bulge"), etc. His collected poems are recommended for any age group. I first became acquainted with his poetry when I was a child and someone read one to me.
An astonishing bargain!
They say that Robert Service was not a 'poet's poet'. The effete literati sneered at his work, and accused him of writing doggerel. But, the people have always loved his work. He was truly a 'people's poet.'
His first volume of poetry, The Spell of the Yukon and Other Verses, sold out while it was still on the presses. Two of his ballads, The Shooting of Dan McGrew and The Cremation of Sam McGee, are among the most memorized poems in history.
The Shooting of Dan McGrew alone made him a half-million dollars, which was a sizeable fortune in his time. He never had to do manual labor for his bread again, after its publication.
This volume of his work contains not only all of his best-known poems (those contained in both The Spell of the Yukon and his second, longer collection, Ballads of a Cheechako), but also many of the photographs of the famous Northwestern photographers, Clarke and Clarence Kinsey -- famous not only for the photography of the Klondike gold rush, but also for Clarke's later photographs of Pacific Northwest logging, some of which were included also in my father's book, When Timber Stood Tall.
This is a high quality coffee table book that you will not only delight in reading before the fire on a winter's evening or when that confining office job is getting you down, but it will also display well on your coffee table, where it will draw friends' attention like a magnet.
For Robert Service is, without a doubt, one of the best-loved of the world's poets. His poetry stands alongside that of Kipling, Coleridge and Poe in the public's affection.

Whether it is in famous works or in lesser known poems, Service paints the harsh, beautiful landscape of the Arctic like no one else. He makes the Northern Lights come alive. His experiences as an ambulance driver in WWI also gave him insight into the terror of war, and the poems from this period, also included, are wonderful, if at times painful to read. Even if you don't care for poetry that much, you'll love this collection.

Darling book about friendship!One of our teaching assistants came to me and begged for this title to be added to the library collection. After checking the book out online, I ordered it. To my delight, it arrived in my book order, and I immediately read it to my 2nd graders in library. We all fell in love with Clarence and Smoky. Both characters are well written and delighfully drawn. The simplistic storyline can easily be read by beginning readers. This is a must for every personal collection!
A Special Tale of Love and Friendship.....Clarence, a city dwelling little pig, sets out on his first big vacation to a dude ranch, out west. After a long and interesting bus ride, he arrives and meets Smoky, a very large and friendly purple horse who introduces him to all the pleasures of western ways. Smoky takes him on long rides through the mountains and canyons, teaches Clarence to play cards with the boys, line dance, and perform on the washtub in a cowboy band. They eat, nap, and even read stories together. It's a wonderful week. But as his vacation comes to an end, Smoky tells Clarence he's getting too old to work on the ranch anymore, and is going to be sold. Best friends are hard to come by, and Clarence can't stand the thought of never seeing his favorite horse again. So he uses all his bus money to buy Smoky, and together they begin the long ride back to the city. It may take years, but as long as they're together, they have all the time in the world..... Jean Ekman Adams has written a delightful story with a gentle message about loyalty, compassion, and friendship, that won't be lost on young readers. Her simple and engaging text, with its satisfying, happily ever after ending, is beautifully enhanced by her charming, bold, and vibrant illustrations, full of endearing ranch characters, and subtle, humorous detail. Perfect for youngsters 3-7, Clarence Goes Out West And Meets A Purple Horse, is a sweet and entertaining, feel good story, that is sure to put a smile on everyone's face. Fun life lessonsNot only does my daughter thoroughly enjoy Clarence & Smoky & the colorful illustrations, but I like the idea that she's getting fun lessons on compassion, friendship & priorities. Having lived in the big city & now finding myself in "the West," I truly enjoy this book myself. (Or perhaps it's my similar tendencies to pack my favorite snacks & not enough clothes when I travel...)This is one of the few books I don't mind reading 4 times before bed!
Clarence Thomas : A Biography

Buy this book in spite of the biased review Amazon providesIt is quite simply a masterpiece. Justice Thomas is portrayed as a real human being who has survived the castigation of the far Left... with a dignity that speaks loud and clear above the wailing of the extreme left Liberals who cannot believe a man of color exists who they cannot control. Read how this man of incredible intellect and courage overcomes all odds to become the first black intellectual to occupy the bench. Unlike Thurgood Marshall who knew political correctness before it became the defacto "law of the land", this biography portrays a true independent thinker and voice for judicial freedom that will not be silenced. The depths to which the Left will sink in its outrage when anyone escapes from the plantation is well documented. The viciousness of the Left and NOW during the Hill debacle is nicely contrasted with their mute impotent silence during the Clinton impeachment proceedings. It is well written and well researched, and most importantly unbiased unlike other competing biographies. Somehow this bio was allowed to be published. Do not forgo the opportunity to read and own your own copy.
RivetingAt first I was worried that I would not be able to get through Thomas' early life to get to his Supreme Court years, by about 75 pages in, I wondered how the Supreme Court years could be as good as the first part of the book was turning out to be. This book is great and, amazingly, a quick read, not to mention well researched and very unbiased. The author takes Thomas to task for his occational self-indulgence, and yet paints a picture of Thomas that leaves me hoping I just read a biography of the next Chief Justice.
A Profile in CourageThis biography of Justice Thomas is outstanding. It encompasses time from pre-civil war slavery to the decision of Bush v. Gore. Although the author's treatment of Justice Thomas is evenhanded, it would be difficult to complete this work without having a greater appreciation for Justice Thomas' independence and intelligence.

A study book not to be left behindFrom the day that I received this book as a gift, I have treasured it and read it with as much enthusiasm as I read the Bible. It has opened my eyes and has allowed me to understand parts of the Bible that I previously misunderstood. Clarence Larkin was definately a gifted man and together with the diagrams and charts, he has helped many a Christian scholars and myself to understand those parts of the Bible he deals with more easily.
Dispensational Truth or God's Plan and Purpose in the AgesThis book is absolutely outstanding. I have purchased all of Rev. Larkins books and they are truly treasures to me. His book titled "Rightly dividing the Word" has blessed me tremendously. It lines up Word for Word with the scriptures and changed my whole level of understanding. The charts are an absolute blessing to the Body of Christ. Praise GOD for using Rev. Larkin's books and charts to give clearer understanding to anyone who studies God's word seriously. These books will continue to bless people for many more years to come. I strongly recommend his books to anyone and everyone who wants to get a better understanding of God's word.
Please read this book, great companion to the Bible!!Don't know where to start when reviewing this incredible book. Rev Larkin gives so many wonderful insights to so many different subjects. It is beyond obvious that he has put years upon years of study into the Bible, and it shows through in this book!! The teaching on the Great Pyramid is absolutely incredible, and his study of prophecy (timelines, events, ect.) are astounding. He does what few can do, by letting the Bible interperet itself using scripture with scripture. A definete must have for any one serious about Bible study!!

a must-haveIf you deal with the media then you should have read this book already. I read Michael Levine's Guerrilla PR Wired, a brilliant book on PR, and then read Winning With The News Media. Both were influential in my career.
For Beginner and Pro AlikeI must admit, as a Public Information professional I at first found Jones' writing style and key points for working with the media rather simplistic. But as I continued reading, I found myself marking and underlining passage after passage. As a spokeman and media relations officer within NATO, and having just returned as a spokesman for NATO operations in Macedonia during a major deployment of troops, I wished I had read this book before I went there. I was doing as many as 20 interviews per day ranging from live stand-ups with CNN and BBC, to radio call-ins and newspaper interviews representing media world-wide. This book reinforced everything I learned leading up to and during that experience, stating clearly what's important and why, as well as many tips and techiques that seem rather minor but are really quite important when push comes to shove and you find yourself face-to-face with a reporter. I will use many points from this book to further refine my own training program for senior leaders within NATO and to prepare them for interviews. A great resource that has found a prominent place among my professional books.

Great Memories of a Triple AceTriple Ace Col. "Bud" Anderson takes you to his first encounters with aircraft as a young boy in rural California. With WWII Captain Anderson finds himself flying missions over Nazi Germany and encountering a number of talented Luftwaffe pilots as the 357th FG makes its effort for Air Supremacy in 1944. Follow this wonderful pilot as he tests aircraft for the Air force followed by a trip to Vietnam. As you read the book keep in mind the author is "still" flying OLD CROW at airshows! No lack of good adventure in "To Fly and Fight". Hard to put down once you pick it up!
Truly outstandingCol. Anderson's accounts of his flying in WWII and as a test pilot are truly memorable. While the writing style is course, it reflects his verbal recollections. I heard Col. Anderson speak at a Test Pilot School graduation; the way he told his stories and his dry humor are as much evident in the book as when he was on the stage. The room was full of test pilots and their families, and you could hear a pin drop. One of the very best books on a man and his love of flying, duty, honor, country, and his family. A must read!
To Fly & FightAs an avid reader of World War Two History. And being a Viet Nam Veteran; I found this book to be a most fascinating history; Of "Not Only the Man"; But his recollections of his life growing up oin Rural California in the 1930's & 1940's. His enlistment in the Army Air Corp; And his experiences in England during the war. This is "No dry" mundane slow reading military text book. Colonol Anderson, tells of his love for flying and his vivid discriptions of Europe during World War Two; Help the reader to picture what it was like for an average guy; Who has a love for flying and trying his best to stay alive in a extremly hostile environment. He does not dwell on the sadder aspects of war. But trys to explain how he learned to cope with these stressors; And still fullfill his dream of flying. He also go's to great lengths to discuss the other aircraft he had flown. His adventures in P-39's and T-6 Texans. I found his book to be non-judgemental; But very fair to all the persons good and bad that he had come to know in his life. He only briefly discusses his flying career during the Viet Nam Conflict. But then this book was not written with Viet Nam in mind solely. This book is about the man; His love of flying.
I found this book to enlightning; refreshing; funny; sad; extrordinary; And written with a smooth tempo and hums along like the engine of a P-51 Mustang. The Book and the Man are unseperable. He takes you up in his Mustang with him through his rememberences. And brings you home to the runway just as a good pilot would do today. I would recommend this book to anyone who has not only an intrest in World War Two. But an intrest in a "Great Man" who lived an extrordinary life. Fighting for all of us; Flying for all of us. This man is a "TRUE"; American Hero.

The greatest of these....I read this book at least once a year to keep me focused on what's important in my life. Love is the greatest, most important force in our universe. This book explains the essense of love and provides profound insights on it purpose and how we may employ it in our daily lives. Read it, learn it, and do it. Your life will be fulfilled!
A book everyone shoule read. Plus it is simple and quickIt has a clear and simple explanation of Love from the Christian perspective that is too often clouded or forgotten through the politics of our world today. Read it for inspiration or to improve your expression of love.
Timeless practical advice for here and nowBy the time I had read this book, I'd already read countless books and essays on religion and truth and love. This book offered me something extra - and opened my eyes to a wonderful new truth - mainly this - that love is enough.
Never having been trained in the social graces, I always felt like a bit of a clutz in social settings such as dinner parties and even simple get-togethers.
Drummond makes the point that if you have love - if you can feel and express love - you have it all. So instead of focusing on which fork to use for the shrimp and salad, I started focusing on how much God loved me and everyone around me.
And that little simple truth enabled me to feel more at ease in every circumstance and in every situation.
Drummond's book is about grace, love, truth, Universal spiritual laws - it's got it all. From little things (like social graces) to big things (like loving our fellow man - irrespective of his lot in life) this book will change your life.
This should be required reading for everyone.

The Road to the Supreme CourtGideon's Trumpet is a marvelous true story of how a poor man new in his heart his rights guaranteed by the United States Constitution and fought for those rights, by himself from prison. It recounts the incredible events surrounding the landmark Supreme Court case of Gideon v. Wainwright. While beautifully describing the uphill battle that Clarence Earl Gideon faced, the author enlightens the viewer with the essential roles of the different branches of government and of the basic but crucial processes that they endure. A great book for anyone who has had any interest in the law or government. A must for law students.
An Excellent Piece of Legal HistoryAs Lewis documents the events surrounding the case of Gideon v. Wainwright, perhaps the most important case of the Warren Court era, he provides us with an easy-to-read yet insightful look at the workings of the Supreme Court and the interaction, and sometimes tension, between the federal and state courts. Lewis also provides a thoughtful commentary on the legitimacy of rules that issue from the courts as opposed to those that issue from our legislatures and in doing so, he provides his reader with a perspective of the Court's role in our democracy. This book made everything I learned in law school all the more clear. It is a wonderful explanation of American criminal and constitutional law for those who have legal training and for those who do not. Both readers will find Gideon's Trumpet accessible but also intellectually challenging.
A Classic, Essential Reading For All Law StudentsGideon's Trumpet is an eloquent and informative look at a very important story in the history of the United States legal system. We need more books like thisI don't want to give anything away but after reading this book, I can only conclude that Machaelle Wright is an extraordinary human who, though she has experienced true hardship, has found an astonishing relationship with nature and the universe. She is thoughtful and spiritual, and nobody's fool! As for her work with nature, she proves that insects are not "pests" but vitally essential to life on Earth and gives a viable alternative to killing or using chemicals to reduce the insect or animal population, an alternative that I have adopted with success! This book has transformed my relationship with the world.
Behaving As If the God in All Life MatteredExcellent, excellent book. Well written, true account of one person's growing up under exceeding adverse conditions - surviving it, and discovering that there is more to 'life' than what she had been taught by the two-leggeds in her life. A courageous lady - saying her story - and venturing into realms that are not 'ordinary' or 'normal' but very very Natural. :-)
What an inspiration...I had *just* finished this author's book on flower essences (another 5-star one in my opinion, though I haven't gotten to writing that review yet), when I felt drawn to reading her personal story. And what a story it is!
Watching her grow from introspective, imaginative child to "how in the world did she survive all that? " teen, to awe-inspiring woman of nature, Machaelle Small Wright takes you on a spiritual journey you will not soon forget. And she does it with wonderful self-effacing humor and a down-to-earth grittiness that draws you toward her, rather than dismissing her as someone unusual. She states we ALL have this potential within us, and I'm prone to believe her (from my own experiences.)
So if you are interested in how to live more in harmony with our world, period, or just like reading a good story--this book has it...Get it. Read it. And never be the same (in a GOOD way! :)
